A Tangled Title Fogs Future

Written by David Kimbrough

This bridge built for railroad traffic but the UPRR spotted using this line long ago. When the San Gabriel River Freeway went in over the tracks, the California Department of Transportation (CalTRANS)performed improvement on the tracks and bridge to obtain the right of way over the tracks. Eventually the UPRR sold the land to a private party. The bridge has been declared a public hazard and money needs to spent to upgrade this bridge. UPRR insists that the bridge belongs to CalTRANS, CalTRANS says they only did work on it and it belongs to the party that owns the adjoining land. The land owner says he only bought the land, not the bridge. Mean while the City of Whittier wants to buy the bridge to extend its pedestrian & bicycle path - but from whom and under what conditions?
