The north approach

This road carried the "proclamation route" of the Lincoln Highway. The initial route of America's first coast-to-coast paved highway was laid out in 1913. The Lincoln Highway came from Mount Vernon over the 10th Avenue Bridge, across this bridge, into Marion and then into Cedar Rapids. The route changed in the early 1920's, bypassing both this bridge and the city of Marion.
