Design
This bridge is a major river span and was the first tied-arch span across the Mississippi River. The bridge was fabricated, and the superstructure built, by American Bridge Company, New York, one of the largest bridge companies in American history. The bridge's designer, Ned L. Ashton, was one of Iowa's most influential engineers.
