A panorama through the magic of digital photography Looking west from the Kinnickinnic Avenue Bascule Bridge. Just under the deck, you can see, in the distance the 1st Street Bridge and on the right side of the channel, a pier from another railroad bridge that was removed. Photo taken by J.R. West Side As seen from the 1st Street Bridge. To the left side of the photo, in front of the subject bridge, is a piling from a removed bridge that was part of the Chicago & Northwestern Railway. The bridge in the distance is the Kinnickinnic Avenue Bascule Bridge. Photo taken by J.R. Manning in June 2008 |
The Canadian National petitioned the Coast Guard in 2003 to leave the bridge in a closed position, unmanned, because the last time there was a call to open the bridge was June 13, 1997. At the time of the petition, there were no active marine operations west of the bridge that would require opening it.
The Coast Guard does hold the right to call for the bridge to be operational with 12 months notice.
A bridge immediately to the west, that was part of the Chicago & Northwestern Railway, has been removed.
