The North Portal Looking south across the viaduct. Four viaducts cross the Menomonee Valley north to south at 6th Street, 16th Street, 27th Street and 35th Street. The Grand Avenue (now Wisconsin Avenue) viaduct crossed the river east-west just a few blocks north and west of here. Just one block north of that viaduct, a streetcar trestle, called the Wells Street Viaduct, carried street car tracks across the valley on the route to Waukesha.
Something like the 16th Street Viaduct, five separate bridges comprise the 27th St. viaduct. The original viaduct, built in 1929, was torn down to be replaced by this viaduct in 1981. Photo taken by J.R. Manning in July 2008 |
